South Florida news this weekend is a triple header. Halloween falls on a Saturday for the first time in years, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show runs its final three days, and early voting ends Sunday — all of it under a forecast that gets stormier by the day, with the No. 1 team in college football on the road Saturday night and the Dolphins at home Sunday afternoon. Here is what is happening across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach from Friday, October 30 through Sunday, November 1, what it costs, and how to plan around the rain.
The headline: storms build all weekend, worst on Sunday
Increased rain and storm chances are expected across South Florida this Halloween weekend, according to the National Weather Service office in Miami, as reported by USA Today. The service says Sunday and Monday “look stormier,” with frequent lightning, gusty winds, and locally heavy rain possible. At 6 p.m. Saturday — right when trick-or-treating starts — rain chances stand at 50% in Miami, 65% in Fort Lauderdale, and 60% in West Palm Beach, with highs of 85 on Friday and 82 on Saturday in Miami.
The Weather Channel puts numbers on the build: scattered thunderstorms Saturday with a 60% rain chance and a high of 83, then thunderstorms Sunday with an 80% chance and a high of 81. A coastal flood advisory runs through Saturday at 8 p.m. and a rip current statement through Sunday evening, the channel lists. King tides are easing from Tuesday’s annual peak, but minor to moderate coastal flooding can continue into early November, according to USA Today’s flood reporting, citing the South Florida Water Management District. Our king tides explainer has the background, and our news feed will track the weekend alerts.
Halloween night: Lincoln Road and HalloWYN anchor Saturday
Lincoln Road Halloween Block Party — Saturday, October 31, Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. Free. The 31st annual party runs in two shifts, according to The Miami Guide: family trick-or-treating with candy stations, crafts, and face painting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., then a costume block party with live music, performers, and DJs — including the Wonderama Band — after dark. Miami on the Cheap lists the party from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. (the Guide says 2 a.m. — check before you go), and notes more than 50,000 people typically turn out across all eight blocks.
HalloWYN — Saturday, October 31, 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., Wynwood Marketplace, 2250 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami. Free general admission. Wynwood’s official Halloween block party returns for its 13th year, presented by SWARM, with Miami DJs and drink specials, according to Miami and Beaches, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau site. Guests who RSVP receive a complimentary first drink, and VIP open-bar packages are available, The Miami Guide adds. Both parties are outdoors — with that 6 p.m. rain chance, costumes that can survive a shower win the night. More Miami picks are on our Miami page.
Last call for scares: Horrorland’s final weekend and Hocus Pocus
The Horrorland at Jungle Island — Friday through Sunday, 7 to 10 p.m., 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, Miami. The seventh-season scream park closes Sunday, November 1 after a run that began September 10, with six haunted houses, three scare zones, and a live circus production, according to Miami and Beaches, which lists tickets from $39.99 general admission and $69.99 with a fast pass. The attraction’s official site, The Horrorland, confirms gates open at 7 p.m. with the welcome show at 7:30.
Hocus Pocus at Factory Town — Friday, October 30 through Sunday, November 1, 4800 NW 37th Avenue, Miami. 18 and older. The sixth edition of the Halloween electronic festival spans five interconnected stages and more than 100 artists across three nights, according to the festival’s official Factory Town page. Three-day general admission is $199.99 and three-day VIP $355.49; single nights run from $64.99 for Sunday general admission to $174.99 for Saturday VIP, per the official ticket listing.
Fort Lauderdale: the Boat Show’s final three days
67th Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show — Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday, November 1, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., six waterfront venues, Fort Lauderdale. The world’s largest in-water boat show closes Sunday after five days across Bahia Mar, the Broward County Convention Center, Hall of Fame Marina, Las Olas Marina, Pier Sixty-Six, and Superyacht Village, with more than 1,300 boats and about 1,000 exhibiting brands, according to The Friendly Scoop’s local guide. Tickets are online only — there is no box office — at $48 for one-day adult general admission, $80 for two days, and $19 for kids 6 to 12, with children under 6 free, according to Denison Yachting’s show guide. The show runs rain or shine, so Sunday’s storms are a poncho problem, not a cancellation. Expect the traffic and restaurant ripple across east Fort Lauderdale all weekend.
Football: No. 1 Miami at night, Dolphins at home Sunday
No. 1 Miami at North Carolina — Saturday, October 31, 7:30 p.m. ET, Kenan Stadium, Chapel Hill, on ABC. The Hurricanes (7-0, 5-0 ACC) put their unbeaten record on the road against the Tar Heels (4-3, 2-2 ACC), according to Canes Warning, which lists Sean McDonough, Greg McElroy, and Katie George on the ABC call. Sports Illustrated confirms the Halloween-night slot and notes a Miami win moves the Hurricanes to 8-0. Kickoff lands right in the middle of Halloween night — plan to watch from the party.
New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins — Sunday, November 1, 4:25 p.m. ET, Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, on CBS. The Dolphins (1-5) come home off their first win of the season, 28–25 at the Jets, to face the Patriots (4-3), per the Miami Dolphins’ official watch guide. NBC Sports confirms the 4:25 p.m. CBS slot and notes New England’s three-game win streak ended Thursday in Chicago. Sunday’s storm forecast makes the tailgate the wettest part of the day.
The news to know: early voting ends Sunday
This is the last weekend to vote early. Early voting in Miami-Dade and Broward runs through Sunday, November 1, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, November 3, according to USA Today’s South Florida early voting guide, which lists all 28 Miami-Dade sites and Broward’s locations and reminds voters to bring photo ID with a signature. Statewide, nearly 2.8 million Floridians had already voted as of Monday, October 26 — about 1.38 million in person and 1.4 million by mail — according to statewide figures reported by Z105 / iHeart Florida News. A stormy Sunday is one more reason to go Saturday. Catch up with our week-ahead preview for what else is on the ballot.
Sunday extras: fall back, Día de los Muertos, and Miami Spice’s last day
Do not forget the clock. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 1, when clocks fall back one hour to 1 a.m. — the earliest date the change can fall, according to USA Today. The Columbus Dispatch notes the Sunshine Protection Act passed the House in July but remains pending in the Senate, so the twice-yearly change stands. Halloween partiers get the 1 a.m. hour twice; everyone else gets an extra hour of sleep before a 6:29 a.m. sunrise and a 5:38 p.m. sunset.
Sunday is also Día de los Muertos. The Adrienne Arsht Center presents Journey to Día de Muertos at 3 p.m. Sunday — Calpulli Mexican Dance Company’s family-friendly story of Lupita and Raul, told through folk song, classical music, and dance — on a pay-what-you-can basis with free tickets available, festive ofrendas, sugar-skull decorating, and mariachi from 12:30 p.m., per the Arsht and Miami and Beaches. In Doral, the fifth annual Día de los Muertos celebration at CityPlace Doral, 8300 NW 36th Street, runs Sunday 4 to 7 p.m. and is free, with folkloric dancers, mariachis, stilt walkers, face painting, food sampling, and a night market at Fountain Plaza, according to Miami on the Cheap.
And Saturday is the deadline at the table: Miami Spice ends October 31 after its extended 25th-anniversary run, with more than 400 restaurants offering three-course menus at $40 for brunch and lunch and $50 or $65 for dinner, according to The Miami Guide. Book the Saturday lunch before the costumes come out. More weekend picks are on our events page.
What’s next
Tuesday, November 3 is Election Day — polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and mail ballots must be received by 7 p.m. to count. Monday brings our next Week Ahead preview in SFL Today Originals. Until then: vote before Sunday night, pack the poncho with the costume, set the clock back, and enjoy the biggest Saturday night of the fall.
