This is a classic South Florida fall weekend: a top-three football team playing its biggest rival at home, two Fort Lauderdale festivals a short walk apart, a free performing-arts block party in West Palm Beach, the closing weekend of Oktoberfest in Miami — and a weather forecast that wants a say in all of it. Here is what is happening Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18, what it costs, and the news to know before Monday, when early voting opens across all three counties.

The big game: No. 3 Miami hosts Florida State — in the rain?

The weekend’s headline event is at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, where the Miami Hurricanes host Florida State on Saturday, October 17 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. Miami enters the rivalry game unbeaten, with wins over Stanford, Florida A&M, Wake Forest, Central Michigan, and Clemson, according to the schedule recap published by the Palm Beach Post. College Football News confirms the 7 p.m. kickoff, the ESPN broadcast, and the Hard Rock Stadium location. The catch is the forecast: Heavy reports a high chance of rain and thunderstorms around kickoff, notes that lightning near the stadium could delay the start or suspend play, and says no official delay had been confirmed in its latest update. Fans heading to Miami Gardens should build in extra time and watch the schools and the stadium for updates before leaving.

Fort Lauderdale: art on Las Olas, fall on the Riverwalk

39th Annual Las Olas Art Fair — Saturday and Sunday, October 17–18, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fort Lauderdale. About 200 artists line Las Olas Boulevard, and admission is free, according to organizer Howard Alan Events as reported by FTL Review and Fort Lauderdale on the Cheap. Plan around the road closure: East Las Olas Boulevard is closed from SE 6th Avenue to SE 11th Avenue from 4 a.m. Saturday through 11 p.m. Sunday, and city parking fees apply. Details: FestivalNet’s Las Olas Art Fair listing.

10th Annual Riverwalk Fall Festival — Saturday, October 17, noon to 4 p.m., Esplanade Park, 400 SW Second Street, Fort Lauderdale. Entry is free for this family festival on the New River, with pumpkin painting, pumpkin bowling, games, food trucks, and vendors; some activities carry fees and well-behaved pets are welcome, according to Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale and Miami on the Cheap. It pairs naturally with the art fair — see both in one downtown trip, and keep up with our Fort Lauderdale coverage.

West Palm Beach: the Kravis Center block party is free

Kravis Center Block Party — Saturday, October 17, noon to 8 p.m., 701 Okeechobee Boulevard, West Palm Beach. The fourth annual block party is free, runs rain or shine across the Kravis Center campus, and features performances and workshops from Ballet Palm Beach, Palm Beach Opera, Palm Beach Symphony, and the Young Singers of the Palm Beaches, plus live bands, DJs, dance workshops, and food trucks, according to the Palm Beach Post and the Palm Beach Daily News. Free tickets are available by RSVP through the Kravis Center; event information is at Miami on the Cheap’s block party listing, which links onward to the Kravis Center. More Palm Beach County coverage is on our Palm Beach page.

Miami: Oktoberfest’s final weekend, plus free opera

Oktoberfest Miami — Friday, October 16, 6 p.m. to midnight; Saturday, 2 p.m. to midnight; Sunday, 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., German American Social Club, 11919 SW 56th Street, Miami. This is the festival’s second and final weekend, with German bands, imported beer, bratwurst and schnitzel, and kids’ games and bounce houses, according to Miami on the Cheap. One-day general admission is listed at $16 on the official Eventbrite listing, with child admission at $7 and free entry for military members and first responders.

Florida Grand Opera SongFest: First Sing — Friday, October 16, 7:30 p.m., First Miami Presbyterian Church, 609 Brickell Avenue, Miami; and Sunday, October 18, 3 p.m., First Presbyterian Church of Fort Lauderdale, 401 SE 15th Avenue. Both concerts are free with RSVP and introduce the company’s 2026–27 Studio Artists in arias, duets, and ensembles, according to Miami on the Cheap and BroadwayWorld; Fort Lauderdale Magazine confirms Sunday’s Fort Lauderdale performance is also free. The news to know before Monday

Early voting starts Monday, October 19 in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties ahead of the November 3 general election, and the deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot is October 22, according to 1290 WJNO and the Palm Beach Post, which puts the tri-county early-voting window at October 19 through November 1. Use the weekend to find your early-voting site and check your registration. Meanwhile, the week’s biggest local government story is still unfolding in Broward: if you missed it, read our deep dive on the Broward sheriff budget fight. And the weather is the weekend’s wild card — The Weather Channel is calling for thunderstorms on Saturday and showers on Sunday in West Palm Beach, a pattern echoed across the region, so outdoor plans should include a rain plan.
