South Florida This Week: 5 Stories to Watch

It's a heavy week in South Florida. A Venezuelan fugitive with a $10 million bounty on his head is expected in federal court here, the No. 3 Miami Hurricanes host Florida State in a rivalry Saturday, and voters are two weeks out from a November 3 general election with teacher pay referendums on the ballot. The Dolphins — still winless — get a bye week to regroup, and a Spanish-language children's book festival takes over the Coral Gables Museum. Here's what we're watching, and why it matters.
1. Venezuelan fugitive faces a South Florida federal judge
What happened: Alvaro Pulido Vargas, a Colombian national accused of profiting from Venezuelan government corruption, was taken into U.S. custody and brought to the Southern District of Florida, the Justice Department announced Sunday, October 11. A Homeland Security Task Force operation carried out the arrest; the State Department and DEA had previously offered a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to his capture. (New York Post) (news-usa.today)
Why it matters: Pulido Vargas faces two separate federal indictments in Florida, from 2019 and 2021, tied to alleged money-laundering and bribery schemes connected to Nicolás Maduro's regime. Prosecutors allege the newer case centers on roughly $1.6 billion in Venezuelan government contracts to supply food and medicine through CLAP, a state-run distribution program — with contracts won through bribes and inflated prices, and about $180 million allegedly flowing through or into the United States, including South Florida accounts. (FinCrime Central) His initial appearance was reported as scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, in federal court in South Florida.
What's next: Watch for the courtroom proceedings this week and what federal prosecutors lay out in the detention hearing. The indictments are allegations only — Pulido Vargas is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
2. No. 3 Miami hosts Florida State in a rivalry Saturday
What happened: The game South Florida circles every fall is here: the No. 3 Miami Hurricanes (5-0) host Florida State at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Saturday, October 17, with kickoff at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. (FSU Wire) (seminoles.com)
Why it matters: Miami has won the last two meetings — 28-22 in Tallahassee last year and 36-14 in 2024 — but the Seminoles (3-3) still hold a 21-19 edge in Miami, and the series sits at 37-33 Hurricanes across 70 meetings. (Sports Illustrated) Miami quarterback Darian Mensah has been among the nation's best, while FSU brings dual-threat quarterback Ashton Daniels and an explosive receiving corps. Miami is coming off a bye week; FSU played Friday night at Louisville, falling 44-20. (On3)
What's next: A sold-out-or-close atmosphere at Hard Rock, plus massive recruiting stakes — seven five-star visitors are expected in Miami this weekend. Check our events page for more big happenings around the game.
3. Election countdown: early voting starts October 19
What happened: With the November 3 general election three weeks out, the registration window is closed — but the voting calendar is just heating up. Early voting runs October 19 through November 1, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, including 28 early voting centers in Miami-Dade County. The deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot is 5 p.m. on October 22. (Palm Beach Daily News) (Broward County Supervisor of Elections)
Why it matters: Beyond the governor's race and U.S. Senate seat, Miami-Dade and Broward voters face referendums on renewing funds that supplement teacher salaries. Both districts say renewal wouldn't raise taxes — it would continue existing funding for four more years. In Miami-Dade, voters approved the referendum in 2018 and 2022; without renewal, it's set to expire June 30, 2027. (USA Today)
What's next: Mail ballots are already moving, and early-voting site lists will be published by the counties this week. If you're voting by mail, request your ballot by the October 22 deadline.
4. Winless Dolphins get a bye week to figure it out
What happened: The Miami Dolphins fell to 0-5 on Sunday, losing 31-24 to the Cincinnati Bengals at Hard Rock Stadium — their first five-game skid to open a season since 2019. Quarterback Malik Willis went 15 of 27 for 137 yards with a touchdown, two interceptions, and a lost fumble on the final drive; Joe Burrow threw four touchdown passes for the Bengals. (Palm Beach Post) (Reuters)
Why it matters: Head coach Jeff Hafley said the Dolphins will "take a hard look" at fixing turnovers during the bye week — Miami has yet to lead at any point this season. Rookie running back Ollie Gordon II was a bright spot with 88 rushing yards and a touchdown while filling in for the injured De'Von Achane. (Athlon Sports)
What's next: Miami is off this week and returns October 25 at the New York Jets. The bigger question hanging over the bye: is the quarterback answer on the roster, or elsewhere? Catch up on the latest in our news feed.
5. Entrelibros brings Spanish-language children's books to Coral Gables
What happened: The Entrelibros International Children's Book Festival returns to the Coral Gables Museum this week, running October 14–18. Organized by Imago por las artes, the festival features 13 independent publishing houses from Spain and Latin America, with storytelling sessions, author meet-and-greets, creative workshops, and book signings — many free. (Times Now World) (Coral Gables Museum)
Why it matters: It's South Florida's only Spanish-language children's literature festival, and its theme this year — "The City as a Territory of Encounter, Learning, and Care" — ties the books to how kids experience Miami itself. School visits are part of the program, so the festival reaches young readers across the community. (Greater Miami & Miami Beach)
What's next: Family Day meets the book fair this Saturday at the museum. See more family-friendly picks on our events page.
